Blessing of the Fleet
Saturday, July 14
Time: 1:00 p.m.
Town Pier
The Blessing of the Fleet is a centuries-old
tradition originating in southern European,
fishing communities. The Blessing is used to
ask for the safety of mariners, good harvest
from the sea, clean waters and good will
and peace among peoples of the world.
The Blessing tradition includes community
involvement, laying a memorial wreath
commemorating those who have died at
sea, and the clergy offering God's blessing
on all mariners.

We are all tied to the ocean, and when we go back to the sea, whether it is to fish or to watch, we are going back from whence we came.

Onlookers enjoy a parade of boats, as owners and their families line up to have their vessels
blessed before setting out for an afternoon on the water.
The History of Plymouth Fishing
The Plymouth fishing fleet began with the Native Americans fishing these shores, continued
with the arrival of the Pilgrims in 1620. For the 1700's through the early 20th century,
Plymouth was a busy industrial port. Factories produced finished good and Plymouth ships
traded all over the world. Today, our fleet is still a part of our local economy.
